I spent not a little time seeking out an appropriate gift and finally settled on Glenmorangie Original. Firstly it was a Scotch whiskey founded in 1843 -- a time in American history when political and economic liberty flourished under the US Constitution. As a Scotch whiskey it symbolized the Jacaboian classical, philosophical tradition. Further, it was after the Jefferson presidency, but before Lincoln and his War of Consolidation.
William III (1650-1702) of Orange was of Dutch and Protestant origin and well known for ousting King James II of England, a Catholic king, in the Glorious Revolution. Only later did I discover that William III was also responsible for the founding of the Bank of England.
