General / Translators / Proofreaders Large projects with single translators are treated essentially as a series of small projects (opens to new window) under the pro-active client mode. Important differences include the following: The start-up fee for translators is smaller, because the expected long term reward is higher, but the level of risk remains unchanged for each segment of the project. Assuming satisfaction on the part of the author-client the translator is entitled to full payment for each segment he or she completes, whether all segments are completed or not. The completion bonus, though based on the entire estimated worth of the project, is only paid once at the end of the entire project. Translators who do not make it to the end, are not entitled to the completion bonus. The total value for each phase of the project depends on the number of project segments and is calculated as follows: where Z$$t = the total amount contracted with the translator where Z$$p = the total amount contracted with the proofreader where X = the number of segments where Y$$t = the amount received by the translator for completion of each segment where Y$$p = the amount received by the proofreader for completion of each segment Z$$t and Z$$p are the contracted amounts between the translator and EARTH, not the amount between EARTH and the author-client. The number of project segments depends on the nature and size of the larger project. The number of project segments X is also negotiable, but must take into consideration the author-client. As with small projects report cards (opens to new window) will be issued by both the translator and the author-client at the end of each project segment until a solid working relationship has been established. Proofreading can be achieved in either of two ways: segment by segment or as a single large project. Segment by segment - As each segment is treated as a small project, the rules regarding proofreading are the same as those for small projects. One important difference is frequency of payment: the proofreader may elect to have his remuneration for each segment paid as a lump sum at the end, and thereby reduce his payment handling costs. Complete project - As the amount of proofreading is substantial unsegmented jobs are treated similarly to small translation projects under the traditional mode of operation with a start-up fee and completion bonus. The completion bonus is received onlly after the proofread document has been approved by the client. Report cards - Whether proofreading is performed segmentally or as a single project, a report card willl be expected at the end of each part for which payment is received, whether delivered as a lump sum or in parts. In general all other rules and guidelines are the same.
