Note 1: There are five key stages at the grade school level. Each is indicated with the code KS. The pre-primary stage (kindergarten) including K1-K3,  although well-defined,  does not form a part of the formal language certification process recommended by SCOLAR. The university stages U1-U3 (undergraduate) and G1-G4 (graduate) are somewhat arbitrary and created for use with the diagram. (table)
Note 2: This is the average number of students enrolled at each grade level for each stage. It is calculated by dividing the total number of students for a particular stage (column 1) by the number of years for that stage. See Source 1a below. The enrolment distributions across the levels U1-U3 and G1-G4 are not rigorous in this regard. (table)
Note 3: The base year (1.00) was determined by selecting the key stage in which the most students were enrolled (KS2) and then dividing by the number of years (3 yrs.) for that stage. All percentages were obtained by dividing either the total or the average (see note 2 above) enrolment number (column 2) into the enrolment number for the base years (84,407 students). (table)
